HTML5 - Hypertext Markup Language version 5. Being a markup language, HTML is essentially the backbone of websites (though not all). HTML is used to specify the content and location of elements such as the Body of the document, Images, Paragraphs, Divisions, Text Headings amongst others as well as declaring the nature of the document and links to other technologies that may be used in the website such as CSS and JavaScript.
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) - a style sheet language - works closely alongside HTML and JavaScript to add visual flare and unique excitement to a website. From coloring of backgrounds, font sizes, colors to setting break-points for different screen sizes, CSS is essential to any website.
Not to be confused with Java, JavaScript is a scripting language that works closely alongside HTML and CSS to give websites visual and back-end functionality. JavaScript can even be used to create browser based video games. All web browsers are equipt with JavaScript engines and over 97% of websites use JavaScript.
PHP is a scripting language that is processed on a Web Server or a PHP interpreter. A recursive backronym, PHP stands for "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor"! Much like JavaScript, it adds unique functionality to a website and works closely alongside databasing programs such as MySQL.
Originally developed as a blog-publishing system, WordPress has grown to be much more than it's advent and is the most commonly used Content Management System. And for good reason. WordPress provides a breadth of themes, which are prebuilt design templates for your website. WordPress is a very good choice for those that would like to be able to easily update their own website after it's been built.
Shopify is the most popular e-commerce platform used for online stores and retail point-of-sales systems. It's a very flexible and easy-to-use platform and is supported by various apps that allows for a unique user experience. Retailers can opt in for Shopify's POS system to allow use of Credit Cards for in-person sales.
